My youngest daughter likes to put everything in her mouth right now. Like EVERYTHING. You parents know exactly what I mean. Crud, fallen food, almost anything she can find. So we have a daily tradition- usually multiple times a day Eva puts something that’s not great for her into her mouth and we take turns feverishly running and digging our fingers into her mouth to pull it out. What’s funny is that she’s learning when she’s found something we don’t want her to have. She’ll kick her crawling speed into high gear and race for the hills. Most of the time, we’re able to get the stuff out of her mouth but sometimes we’re not so lucky and we just pray it wasn’t alive! In Psalm 139, verse 23 the psalmist says, “God, I invite your searching gaze into my heart. Examine me through and through; find out everything that may be hidden within me. Put me to the test and sift through all my anxious cares (The Passion) Much like the infant hastily crawling away with garbage in their mouth, sometimes we find ourselves in a similar situation. But instead of running away from God when we feel like we’re in trouble, we can chose to sit still, let him look in our hearts, and allow him dig out the garbage. It’s not always easy, and it’s rarely pretty. But the end result is something magnificent. My youngest daughter likes to put everything in her mouth right now. Like EVERYTHING.
